BEYOND ELSEWHERE - JAN 2009
'Beyond Elsewhere is part art exhibition and part interactive installation.
As well as showing their work, the artists - Sue Blinkho, Kath Moloney, Caron Ottewell, Jatin Patel, Jane Pitt and Nelly Riotkin - will be growing a tree sculpture in the gallery during the course of the exhibition. By re-using newspaper, magazines and card board packaging, they will be creating a tree using plaiting and basketry techniques. You can come along and see the artists at work during the exhibition on Saturdays between 12pm - 3pm at the gallery and visitors are welcome to join in and add their own piece to the growing sculpture.
The artists involved have worked on new pieces inspired by and evolving from a multi-disciplinary arts project, The Importance of Elsewhere, held at the Old Chatham Registry Office earlier in the year. This innovative project run by Curious Planet, brought together established artists with emerging artists, and art students from different disciplines, such as opera, jazz, dance, painters and sculptors. The artists and students worked together with people from the Kent Association for the Blind and mcch Pathways to transform the old registry office into a labyrinth of art installations.
Beyond Elsewhere is an opportunity offered by the NAC for those artists involved to continue working on ideas that had sprung from the Importance of Elsewhere Project.
