The Nucleus project has been running since November 2007. Originally conceived as a six week, not-for-profit 'retail event' for local artists and designers to sell their wares in the run up to Christmas, the venture surpassed all expectations and reached its seventeenth month of trading in May 2010 despite the economic downturn and two changes of location.
Nucleus is now embedded permanently in its third premises - right next door to its original site on Rochester High Street - and continues with its mission to foster new and existing artistic talent and promote and support the growth and sustainability of creative industry in the Medway area.
The gallery shop is staffed exclusively by volunteers, many of whom are exhibiting artists, and offers exhibition space for artists, designers and craftspeople from wide and varied backgrounds. Students and amateurs rub shoulders with emerging talent and established professionals aged from 18 to 80.
The commission Nucleus earns from sales and submission fees is invested back into the project and is used to cover overheads and provide further support and opportunities for the local creative community.
